Do you recommend booking in advance?


In a word, holla!  While Syd’s still accepts walk-ins when space is available, the fact is most days are fully booked well ahead of time.  Weeknight and weekend spots tend to fill up especially quickly, so we recommend booking as far in advance as possible during those peak hours.


How do I get in at the last minute?


By all means, call in and ask.  We may not be able to help you, but then again there may be some last minute cancellations.  Alternately, we can add you to the waiting list.  Calling in just after we open (usually at 10 a.m.) can maximize your chances of finding a slot as that is often the time of greatest flux in the day’s schedule.  If you have trouble getting through, leave a voicemail clearly stating your name, phone number and desired service.


I’m running late, what should I do?


If you expect to arrive within 5 minutes of your scheduled appointment time, you needn’t call in—we assume you’re on your way.  If you will be 10 minutes late or more, please be advised that calling in, while thoughtful, will not negate the fact of your tardiness and your service will likely be shortened or abridged or you may be asked to reschedule entirely.  This is in consideration of the clients with appointments following yours.  Please allow sufficient travel time to navigate Chapel Hill’s ever-growing labyrinth of traffic congestion, road construction and parking.  In general, we recommend planning to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.


I have to cancel at the last minute, what’s the best way to do that?


If you must cancel an appointment, please give us as much advanced notice as possible—even a few extra hours can make a difference.  But generally speaking, 24-48 hours will be sufficient to rebook your stylist’s time.  In the case of a last minute, after hours change of plan, please feel free to leave a message on our voicemail the night before rather than waiting for the shop to open the next morning.  If you don’t have access to a phone, you may also send us an email.


If you miss three or more appointments (either miss or cancel within less than 24 hours) we may ask that you leave a card on file.  You will then be charged 50% of the value appointment if the appointment is cancelled without proper notice or if you miss the appointment.


I have an hour to kill before my appointment; can I come hang out in your waiting room?


Sure.  Space is limited, but Syd’s offers complimentary coffee and tea, free wi-fi and dozens of current magazine subscriptions for your early bird perusal.


Do you take credit cards?


Yes, we do!  Syd’s accepts cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and personal check.  We do ask that gratuities be paid in cash.


What is customary with regard to gratuities?


Tipping is customary for beauty treatments in the U.S.  For most people that means 15-20 percent of the service total.  You may of course leave more or less, depending on the quality of the service.  You are welcome to leave a tip at the reception desk.  There are envelopes at the desk for you to use.


I usually book online, but I have an unusual request that isn’t covered by your online menu, what should I do?


Call us!  Syd’s offers online booking for your convenience, but if you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.  Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to assist you.  Also, toggling between online booking and phone or in-person booking is totally allowed and encouraged!


I’ve always booked in-person before, but now I think I might like to try the online thing.  Is that okay?


Totally.  It’s a two-step process: first, go ahead and register online following the online directions; next, give us a call and let us know.  At that point we will be able to combine both accounts so that you will have access to your history on your new account.


Ack!  I was on vacation and forgot to confirm my online appointment?  Do I still have one?


Yes.  Not to worry.  But don’t be surprised if you get a follow-up phone call as well.  Usually, clients with an email address on file will receive a confirmation notice via email 72 hours before their scheduled appointment(s).  Clients without an email on file will receive a confirmation call the day before.


What is your cell phone policy?


We don’t have one…yet.  But please be considerate of others in your cell phone usage.


What’s the parking situation?


Syd’s on Graham abundant street parking and lots are available nearby.  Syd’s on Graham is served by the CW, F, and J bus routes.


Does Syd’s have a children’s rate?


Nope.  Syd’s does provide haircutting services for children able to sit still for a 30-minute service, but haircuts for kids generally cost the same as adult cuts.  This is because pricing is determined by the skill and time required to effect the desired result, not by the size or adorableness of the patron.


Is it okay to bring my kids with me to my hair appointment?


We would prefer that you didn’t, but children who are able to sit quietly for extended periods of time are generally not a problem.  If your child is too young or too energetic to do this, please be mindful of our other patrons and consider making other arrangements.


Do you do wedding hair?


We do!  Syd’s does wedding hair onsite or in the shop, with updos starting at $70.  See our wedding page for more info.


I’m getting an updo today, what should I expect?


Updos work best on hair that “day-old” (hair that is shampooed and dried prior to arriving at Syd’s).  Please wear a button up top so that you can easily change clothes without mussing your do.  If you require a shampoo before your updo please additionally book “blow dry style” in addition to your updo.


Some of your services don’t have prices listed on the menu, instead it says “prices vary.”  What’s that?  Should I be frightened?


No!  Don’t be scared.  It just means we want to see your hair first to determine how much time will be required to achieve the desired result.  This is especially true of new hair color clients.  Just book a “Consult” and then come on in for your complimentary, 15-minute meeting about how awesome we’re going to make your hair.  It’s free!  It’s fun!  And we don’t mind at all.  Really.


How do I know if I require an add-on?


Are you a new client, booking with us for the first time?  Do you have especially long, thick or coarse hair that might require extra time?  Do you like an especially polished blow out or have fancy plans?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions an add-on might be in order.  If you’re still unsure, err on the side of allowing more time rather than less.  Better yet, call us and we’ll help you figure it out.
